I would like to thank all those people who have commented on the fabulous condition of the course. We work very hard to produce a playing surface that matches and often far exceeds that of any course in the Wigan area and it is always nice to hear the appreciation of customers!

Loyalty cards

New for 2014 Porters Wood Golf Course, located in Orrell, Wigan is delighted to announce that we have brought out a loyalty card to reward our regular customers. Simply collect 10 stamps to receive a free round of 9 holes golf. For more information please enquire within the clubhouse.

After a terrible winter for golf lovers the course is now back open for play 7 days a week. Whilst the weekend pricing remains the same for the fifth year running there has been a slight increase in green fees for mid-week golf. For 9 holes the price for adults is now £8, juniors £7 and seniors £6.50 (please note there is no seniors rate on the weekend). Second 9’s can be purchased for just £5.

We have kept the course closed through much of this very wet winter, and as a result we can offer you a course in remarkably good condition for the time of year. The teeing grounds are back on the grass tees and the greens are in excellent condition being dry, firm and true.

Hogan hole-in-one

No not legendary golfer Ben Hogan, but our very own Chris Hogan, who is a regular player at Porters Wood Golf Course. The ace was acheived on the 124 yard par 3 second hole, during windy conditions on Easter Sunday. Congratulations Chris!

I think my last post regarding better weather may have been made in haste as since then we have had half a foot of snow and temperatures have plummeted once again. It seems like every month we hit a record for bad weather, with March 2013 being recorded as the coldest March in 50 years! North West England and Wigan in particular seem to have born the brunt of it again but the course is now clear of snow and although we have had a couple of frost delays the course has been open by 9am every day over the past week. We are back on the grass tees and as always we are playing on our proper greens.

Last tee time is now back to 6.30pm, so come on down and get your swing in tune for the Masters next week!

25 Official course record

Congratulations to Andy Teasey who sent an official course record of 25 in a recent club competition. The round included a staggering 5 birdies, coming at the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 9th. Unfortunately a bogey on the 8th prevented Andy going even lower!

Sky Sports News comes to Porters Wood…

p9100208

Sky Sports News cameras were at Porters Wood Golf Course on Thursday 30th September, to film a Wigan v Saints grudge match with St. Helens’ Paul Sculthorpe taking on Wigan’s Steve Hampson.

Sky’s Frazer Dainton was on hand to oversee this preliminary to the big rugby league match on Saturday. The format was matchplay over 5 holes. Both Steve and Paul have been regular visitors to the course this Summer and were quickly into their stride, Steve narrowly winning the first hole. On the second, Paul hit an excellent tee shot just short of the green, but it was Steve who was to win the hole with a terrific up and down for par, giving Wigan a 2 hole lead.

Steve finished the match in style on the third hole, sinking  a tremendous 12 footer  for par, and winning the spoils for Wigan Warriors!

The guys played on, Paul winning the 4th after a classy chip and putt for par, the 5th being halved in 4. But the match belonged to Steve and he accepted the trophy from Frazer Dainton on the 5th green.

Low scoring continues!

With the Porters Wood Autumn golf league into it’s 4th week the low scoring of week one has continued. With the course in fantastic condition, and playing a little easier now it has softened up since the rock hard conditions of Summer, players have continued to produce personal best scores.

In week 2 Mark Liptrot scored a fantastic 6 under par to claim the win narrowly from Phil Jackson (4 under). In week 3 John Bennett posted a best ever nett 21 (8 under) to win by a massive 6 shots from the rest of the field, Lee Phillips claiming second place with 2 under par.

The Fourball Better Ball compitition has also started with John Bennett and Eddie Willis beating a rather unfortunate Phil and Jonathen Kearsley on the 9th green. The match ebbed both ways and finsihed in near pitch black conditions on the last hole - Eddie Willis making a crucial par 4. In Group B John Hoystead and Paul Sinker outplayed Martin Ishmael and Andy Teasey to win 2 & 1 with some very impressive golf. In gale force winds Paul in particular prodcued a couple of stunning shots to settle the match.

Rick Ishmael claims Matchplay title

Congratulations to Rick Ishmael, who won the Porters Wood Golf Course matchplay final yesterday in blustery conditions. Rick, who posted a best ever gross 32 in the semi-final to defeat Mark Liptrot on the final hole, played his father-in-law Keith Fawcett, who had overcome John Bennett on the first extra hole of their semi-final the previous week.

Rick playing off 6, had 5 shots on keith, and in the end this proved telling. With the match all-square coming down the last Rick holed a solid 5-footer for par and victory by 1 hole.

A pairs matchplay will be running alongside the Autumn league, so if you have not already done so, please sign up now! The Autumn league started in terrific style last week with Eddie Willis shooting 5 under par to beat an unfortunate Phil Jackson (who also shot -5) on card count-back, courtesy of a par on the last.

Andy “Teasey’s out” victory!

Yesterday, Sunday 15th August, scratch player Andy Teasey narrowly claimed the Porters Wood Summer league title by a single point. In his final round Andy held his nerve, while his playing companions faltered, to shoot a solid 29. Andy birdied the 8th hole and made a great up and down on the last for par, to score 18 points and claim victory. His total of 147 points from his best 8 scores left him 1 point ahead of long time table topper John Hoystead and the fast finsihing Keith Fawcett. The latter moved from 11th place with two weeks remaining to shoot up the table to tie for second, winning round 10 and 11 of the competition along the way.

Jonathen Kearsley finished 4th with 144 points, while Mark Liptrot claimed 5th with 143 points. Four players tied 6th - Martin and Rick Ishmael, Phil Jackson (round 9 winner) and Eddie Willis - on a total of 142 points.

Martin Ishmael won the closest pin competition on the 7th hole, as he did in the Spring league, with another stunning iron shot!

Thankyou to everyone who participated, and a big congratulations to Andy on a thoroughly deserved victory. The Autumn league gets under way this week with the format changing to strokeplay, rather than stableford. There will also be a pairs competition running alongside the league - please ask for details.
