In the golfer of the year competition it has been a fast start for Ian Nairn who leads the way on a whopping 50 points. Darren Peet and Tom Powell share 2nd place on 31 points with a host of other players in the chasing pack behind. Last year’s singles matchplay was finally finished with Peter Bull beating Bill Ball in the final.

2018 Golfer of the year

The golfer of the year for 2017 was Nick Thoday! In second place was Martin Ishmael, closely followed in third by Gavin Harrison. Tied 4th was Peter Bull and Tom Powell with Harold Davenport claiming 6th prize.

The golfer of the year 2018 has just begun and anyone interested in taking part should ask to speak to Martin in the clubhouse. We play one competition every week, be it 9 or 18 hole stableford/strokeplay with one doubles comp each month. There are prizes each week for the top 3 and points are earned for the golfer of the year league table. It is £2 entry each week on top of your green fee. You can play your round at any time of the week but your card must be signed by another person (whom ideally is also entering the competition). To enter you will need to hand in 3 completed scorecards so a Porters Wood handicap can be made for you. The average handicap for players is around 7 or 8 shots for 9 holes so you don’t need to be Tiger Woods to take part!

We will also be running a matchplay competition starting in May.

2014 Review

My apologies for not posting competition results sooner, but hey better late than never!

Spring League Champion: Martin Ishmael

Summer League Champion: Kieran Palin

Autumn League Champion: Gavin Harrison

Singles Matchplay Champion: Kieran Palin

Fourball Betterball Champions: Richard Ishmael & Darren Peet

It was a good year in general with some very closely fought league tables, especially the Summer and Autumn leagues. Both Kieran Palin and Gavin Harrison competed for almost every trophy, with Gavin finishing runner-up in both matchplay competitions. Special mention should go to Peter Bull who scored well throughout the year but narrowly missed out on any silverware.

I should also mention that we did indeed have a return match with SGA on their own patch, but the less said about it the better! As we got a good hiding going down over 7 matches by 5 1/2 to 1 1/2. Roger and Nick Eden got us off to a good start winning their match but from there it was all downhill with the next 5 matches going comprehensively to the home side before Paul Sinker and Kieran Palin claimed a draw in the final match. My thanks to all at SGA for being extremely generous hosts - hopefully we can arrange another match at Porters Wood in the Summer and turn the tables!

The draw for the 9 hole singles has been made with 18 entrants forward. You can view the draw on the clubhouse notice board. There are no set times for competitions and customers are reminded that we are open for pay on the day golf 7 days a week, including the weekend.
